A little bit about Tecumseh’s History.

the founding of tecumseh ontario

Tecumseh originally became a city in 1921, splitting away from Windsor to better serve its resident’s interests and has seen a steady growth since starting with the addition of a large food processing plant that took advantage of the surrounding farmland and shipping routes. The processing plant remains in the city to this day and continues to employ many area residents. As the years passed the town became more developed, adding a number of amenities and local businesses, seeing a large influx in growth in the early 1990s when the town more than doubled its population. Since then the city has seen little growth in terms of population but a great amount of development in local small businesses as well as parks and recreation.

The crown jewel of the Tecumseh recreational park system is Lakewood Park. A gorgeous 65 acres of manicured turf with paved walking trails and outdoor fitness equipment. The park also features an 18-hole disc golf course I winding water channel and pond as well as full access to Lake St. Clair via sandy beach. Pavilions and gazebos are available for larger family and community based events and the park is noted for its unique and innovative design features and beautiful landscaping. The park also plays host to several summer concert series and free festivals.

Aside from Lakewood there are five major community parks and a number of neighbourhood parks in addition to the towns pumping stations. The Tecumseh pumping stations are small parcels of land that provide significant water front access for the town to allow surrounding residents an opportunity to view the lake. The town also holds 47 hectares of publicly accessible forested areas.

Golf fans will appreciate the town’s close proximity to a number of 18-hole courses including the coveted Beach Grove Golf and Country Club, and exclusive recreation facility with a long record of distinction in the county. Sports fans have quick access to the WFCU centre as well as the Tecumseh arena and with the recent addition of a skate park and leisure pool swimming Centre for both adults and children, there’s recreational fun for all ages.

The town is also known for a variety of annual community events. The Tecumseh Corn Festival has run for over 40 years and is rated as one of the top 50 festivals in Ontario. The event features a classic car show, live music and locally-based food and beverage vendors. And culinary fans won’t want to miss the Taste of Tecumseh Food and Wine festival which features a number of the area’s best wineries breweries and restaurants.

For even greater entertainment options it’s just a short commute to Windsor and Detroit for easy access to galleries, museums, theaters and stadiums. Tecumseh has the access to big city life without seeing the day to day hustle and bustle.
